AV Receiver Heat Dissipation Calculator
Class-AB AVRs dump a lot of heat. Idle plus (P_out × (1/η − 1)) is a starting thermal load. Leave the gap; do not stack a disc player on the vents.

- Heat
- 71W
- Heat
- 244BTU/h
- Starting vent gap
- 50mm
Calculation method
Heat ≈ idle + P_rated × load × (1/η − 1). BTU/h = watts × 3.412. Gap grows with heat.
Exact formula
Q = P_idle + P_out(1/η − 1). Gap mm ≈ max(50, 40+Q/8). Limits: no Class-D vs AB distinction beyond η, no enclosure CFD, no ambient derating, gap is a shelf heuristic.

Frequently asked questions
Why so inefficient?
Class AB AVRs live there. Class D runs cooler for the same watts.
Closed cabinet?
Add active exhaust. This gap assumes open air above the chassis.
BTU for HVAC?
Yes — add it to the room load if the theater is sealed.
